Topics Courses Descriptions for Fall 2019

ENG 377 Seriality (Darrohn)

Serial form—publication of narratives and other texts in installments, rather than all at once—was important in the Victorian period (1837-1901).  Thus, many of the classic Victorian texts that we read today in a single volume were read by their original audience week by week or month by month over long stretches of time.  In this course, we will explore the significance of seriality.  How are various textual elements—such as plot, characterization, imagery, and theme—affected by serial publication?  What readerly experiences are enhanced (suspense? ongoingness?)?  What readerly traits are fostered (patience? speculativeness?)?  What happens when multiple serial texts are consumed concurrently?  We will explore these and similar questions as we study a variety of Victorian texts, including those by some of the following: Wilkie Collins, Charles Dickens, George Eliot, Elizabeth Gaskell, Thomas Hardy, and William Makepeace Thackeray.  Although our primary focus is Victorian seriality, we will also pay some attention to seriality in our culture today.
